David Walks-as-a-Bear (FOL program)

Born in 1957 in Muskegon, Michigan, David Walks-as-a-Bear is a product of a diverse background. Because of this, his life has been flavored by three distinct cultures; the culture of the "Old South", the culture of the Mid-West and the culture of the Native American Indian.

    His parents hail from the South and his Southern roots have colored much of his life. The fourth of four boys, his oldest brother was born in Tennessee, the next in Michigan, the following in Tennessee, and finally, David entered the world in the Great Lake State of Michigan.

    Walks-as-a-Bear’s family traveled back and forth, always seeking to maintain the Southern ties. His philosophy and outlook on life has been molded by values often deemed "Southern". His ancestral ties hark back to Southern manners and the Old Confederacy. In this way, the American South has played a vital role in his life.                                                                                                                                                                                                     

Here is an excerpt from Walks-as-a-Bear’s latest Ely Stone book:

"Tribal Cop Ely Stone is back in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  He is fishing the Yellow Dog River when he finally catches the cutthroat trout he's been after.   That’s when something... catches him.  It's only a moment, then... it's gone,   but the knowing.... lingers on in Stone's heart and mind.  It was there, he had   seen it... felt its hot, canine breath on his neck… hadn't he?  Yet, later, in   his contemplative moments, he wonders if he was mistaken.  He could not have   seen what he thinks he saw... could he?.......

    Then...   the clouds darken, and the river shifts its current. Stone finds, much to his   discomfort, that the culprit may not, indeed... be a mortal man.  Could this   kidnapper actually be... a primordial thing – a frightening manifestation of old   – something from the long past? Is it an ever-present,

albeit hidden, entity – a   being of evil witchery?
